Snapshots of life this week

september 15

This past Sunday was my roommate Abbey and my friend Mike's birthdays so we had a fun celebration for the two of them. Here's a picture of Abbey's birthday flowers. I was sitting on my bed reading on Tues and noticed how beautifully the light was streaming in through the window and hitting the flowers. Makes me think of how I desire my life to be made beautiful as it is illuminated by Light....

Wednesday I had to go to San Rafael for a Starbucks class. This is Mission San Rafael which sits right up the hill from the Starbucks there. I've seen it before and always wanted to take some pictures of it because it always looks so picturesque up on the hill with the blue sky behind it.

I LOVE the store Anthropologie. If I could actually afford it, I would purchase my whole wardrobe and decorate my whole house from there. But alas, all I can do is walk through the store and dream. Here is a picture from my browsing today.

en masse

9/07 These are secret steps. One woman turned this trash laden hill into a garden. There are supposed to be parrots but I did not see them, I guess i'll have to go back.
9/06 Beads and Baubles
9/05 I love the dichotomy of the church and the glass buildings.
9/04I wish it were fall but these remind me that its close. And while it won't be as beautiful as birmingham there are colorful leaves to enjoy.

Color

According to Dictionary.com, Color is:
"the quality of an object or substance with respect to light reflected by the object, usually determined visually by measurement of hue, saturation, and brightness of the reflected light; saturation or chroma; hue."

What caught my attention about this gate is the color. I love the contrast of the green wall and white gate against the blue sky. I look at this picture and the color brings me joy. In thinking about this, the color by its definition, is simply the reflection of light. As a believer, I am also called to be a reflection of light. I am called to reflect the light, truth, and love of Christ. What color am I reflecting to those around me? Am I allowing myself to be emptied on a daily basis so that I may be filled with his presence? Just as the color of this photo brings me joy, I desire for my life to bring joy to others as I reflect Light. What are you reflecting?

For the past 3 years I have fallen in love with photography. Now, don't get me wrong....I have always LOVED pictures. All through high school and college I carried a camera with me everywhere that I went. My friends even used to give me a hard time for spending many of my saturdays going to scrapbooking events. "Danielle, you're such a grandma" they would tell me, but I had no shame. In the past 3 years, however, I have fallen in love with the ART of photography. I love what pictures capture. I love how they draw you in. I love the beauty that they display. I love how a simple everyday object can be made beautiful just in the way that it is captured in a photo. As I have fallen in love with photography, I have desired to learn how to do photography well. For a long time I dreamed of one day owning a nice camera and really learning how to use it, but seeing that I'm a poor grad student, the prospect of making an investment like that is not in my fore-seeable future. Being kind of bummed about that, I was inspired last week by a classmate who has a photography business. When I asked her how she got started, she said that she just started taking one picture a day. She didn't start out with fancy equipment or special photography classes. She just took pictures one day at time. And so that's what we are going to start doing....taking one picture a day for a year. I am excited for the challenge. I am excited to look at the simple things around me and challenge myself to see beauty. I am excited to challenge myself creatively and to learn photography one picture at a time. Thanks for journeying along with us!
